Messing with nature… nature that Moreau thought was imperfect. The issues here, I feel we’re supposed to be there because that is how it was originally written. It was definitely sad and so frustrating that they never got anywhere … all her naïveté but then the “good Dr. It’s amazing to see how someone can see thing SO differently. Unfortunately this was a tragedy from the beginning and it was always written that way… like how in the end Frankenstein’s monster’s story was too. I loved it! It went with the original it’s based on, spoke about the people of the time, showed the head space and experience of each of the different characters-/(some were so lost!) and then added a Mexican flare in actual historical time. *Thanks, NetGalley, for a free copy of this book in exchange for my fair and honest opinion.

Overall, I didn’t connect with The Daughter of Doctor Moreau. Third, the ending is entirely forgettable and lackluster. Part of that is that there are too many characters: Montgomery, Doctor Moreau, Ramona, Lupe, Hernando Lizalde, Eduardo, Cachito, Aj Kaab, Pinta, Aayin, K’an, and many others. Is this book about Carlota’s relationship with her father? Is this book about a love triangle? A romance? Is this book about crafting ones own family and own identity? It seems to try to be the answer to everything but succeeds in nothing. What exactly is it trying to accomplish? The sci-fi portion of this book is really underwhelming. Second, the identity of this book is lost on me. The next portion of the book is better however, it seems that most of the conflicts boiled down to a version of “Did not!” “Did too!” “Did not!” “Did too!” The first 10% of the book is so boring that I had to put it down and pick it back up again. However, The Daughter of Doctor Moreau didn’t compete with Velvet Was the Night.įirst, the storytelling needs refining. Velvet Was the Night has one of the most skillfully crafted endings that I have read.
